Chapter 5 - “THIS STAYS INSIDE”

After the stairs, I told Trent I wanted to speak with Alessio.
He said:
“About what?”
“You know.”
“You fell.”
“I’m not doing this.”
He sat across from me.
“You want to destroy my life because I grabbed you during an argument?”
“You pulled me down stairs.”
“You lost your balance.”
“Then let me tell Alessio and let him decide what he thinks.”
Trent laughed.
“No.”
That no was quiet.
Then:
“This stays inside the family.”
I almost laughed back.
“Alessio is my family.”
“He’s the boss.”
“And my brother.”
“You think those are separate?”
There.
Trent’s mistake.
And maybe mine.
He believed telling Alessio meant invoking institutional judgment, not asking my brother for help.
So he started explaining consequences.
A formal domestic-violence complaint would trigger automatic suspension from the family security council.
His weapons access through licensed security work could be reviewed.
His employment contract had a conduct clause.
The club board could revoke membership.
His reputation inside the organization would collapse.
I said:
“That sounds like your problem.”
He looked at me.
“No. It becomes yours too.”
Then:
“Every wife in this family understands privacy.”
I asked:
“Which wives?”
May you like
He had no answer.
Because most of the rule existed in men’s heads.
