Patient reports mechanical fall on stairs.
No loss of consciousness.
No assault disclosed.
Husband present.
No obvious intoxication.
The record later embarrassed me.
People imagine victims leave clean evidence.
Sometimes we leave the exact opposite.
The nurse asked whether I felt safe at home.
Standard screening.
Trent had stepped out to take a call.
I could have answered no.
I answered yes.
Why?
Because the word no looked larger than the fracture.
No meant questions.
Police.
Family.
Alessio.
Marriage.
Club.
Trent’s position.
My mother calling from Florida.
Every cousin knowing by breakfast.
Yes meant cast.
Pain medication.
Home.
Sleep.

Then Trent returned with coffee.
Kissed my forehead.
Held my bag.
Helped me into the car.
At home, he placed pillows under my arm.
Set alarms for medication.
Ordered soup.
For twenty-four hours, he was gentle enough to make me wonder if I had misunderstood the stairs.
That is another thing people dislike hearing.
