Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY PIN

Trent was not born a Grimaldi.

He was born in Ohio to a police dispatcher and a mechanic.

No dynasty.

No inherited money worth discussing.

He met Alessio twelve years earlier through private security work.

Competent.

Disciplined.

Good under pressure.

He rose.

By thirty-two, he supervised security for three Grimaldi hospitality properties and advised the family’s legitimate risk-management companies.

Then he met me.

I was twenty-one.

He was thirty-three.

Alessio objected to the age difference.

I told him:

“You date women younger than me.”

He had no answer good enough to survive that.

Trent and I married two years later.

The family pin came afterward.

Not because he married me.

Officially.

Alessio awarded it after Trent led the evacuation during a hotel fire.

No deaths.

No serious injuries.

He had done something worthy of respect.

That mattered.

He did not enter my marriage as a villain.

The pin changed him slowly.

Or revealed something.

At family dinners, men who once called him Walsh started calling him brother.

Employees stood when he entered certain rooms.

Older members stopped questioning how he gave orders.

Then he began using one sentence at home.

“You know how this family works.”

Usually when I disagreed.

What family?

Mine.

May you like

That was the strange part.

He had learned my family’s worst habits and returned them to me as tradition.
