Chapter 2 - ELEVEN DAYS EARLIER
My wrist broke on a Tuesday.
The official version was simple.
I slipped on the service stairs behind our townhouse.
Reached for the railing.
Fell badly.
Landed on my left hand.
Distal radius fracture.
No surgery required.
Reduction.
Cast.
Then brace and sling for comfort.
The emergency physician asked me what happened.
Trent stood beside the examination bed.
I said:
“I fell.”
Not technically a lie.
I did fall.
I just omitted the hand on my arm before it happened.
That distinction kept me awake for eleven nights.
The argument began in our kitchen.
I told Trent I wanted him out of the townhouse for a week.
Not divorce yet.
Space.
He asked:
“Why?”
I said:
“Because I don’t like who I am around you.”
He laughed.
“You’re dramatic when you’re tired.”
“Leave.”
“Where?”
“Hotel. Club. Your brother’s. I don’t care.”
“My home is here.”
The townhouse belonged to me before marriage.
That did not mean I could instantly erase his occupancy rights.
I knew that.
I was not talking as a lawyer.
I was talking as a wife who wanted one night without checking her husband’s mood before choosing a sentence.
Trent followed me toward the service exit.
I opened the door.
He caught my upper arm.
“Don’t walk away.”
“Let go.”
“I’m talking to you.”
I twisted.
He tightened his grip.
Then pulled me backward.
My heel missed the top stair.
I fell three steps.
My left hand hit first.
Pain exploded from wrist to elbow.
I screamed.
Trent came down immediately.
“Sylvia.”
He looked horrified.
For ten seconds, I saw the man I married.
Then I said:
“You did that.”
And his face changed.
“You slipped.”
“You grabbed me.”
“I grabbed you because you were leaving during an argument.”
“You pulled me.”
“I tried to stop you.”
“You pulled me.”
Then:
“Think before you say something stupid at the hospital.”
That was when fear replaced pain.
Not because he threatened to kill me.
