Chapter 7 - HOW MARCUS BUILT A WALL

It did not happen in one day.

That was what Sarah wanted me to understand.

Marcus did not marry her and immediately lock every door.

At first, he was charming.

Protective.

Attentive.

He agreed Nathan was arrogant but told Sarah:

“He loves you. He’ll come around.”

When I sent my first apology email two days after our fight, Marcus intercepted it because Sarah had used his laptop while hers was being repaired.

He deleted it.

Then replied from Sarah’s account:

Stop contacting me.

I received that.

Sarah did not know.

Later, Sarah borrowed a coworker’s phone to call me.

My number returned disconnected.

It was not.

Marcus had shown her a changed contact entry.

A digit altered.

Small.

Effective.

He forwarded Sarah screenshots of “messages” from me.

Forged.

He mailed me the fake bracelet.

Forged farewell letter.

Then he told Sarah I sent her remaining boxes through a courier with a note:

Do not come to the house again.

I had never sent boxes.

Some were Sarah’s belongings Marcus retrieved after bribing a former property manager.

“Why didn’t you just come?”

I hated myself the instant I asked.

Sarah stared.

“Come where?”

“My house.”

“You told me not to.”

“But—”

“Nate.”

She looked at me.

“He showed me a letter from your lawyer saying I would be trespassing.”

My blood went cold.

“Which lawyer?”

She knew.

May you like

We both did.

“Warren.”
