Chapter 17 - SARAH COMES HOME

Not my home.

Hers.

That distinction mattered.

After hospital discharge, Sarah moved into a secure furnished residence arranged through a domestic-violence organization and paid partly from her own trust under independent control.

I offered my mansion.

She said no.

Old Nathan would have argued.

New Nathan tried:

“Okay.”

She smiled.

“That hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Lily spent nights with Sarah once physicians cleared both.

The twins stayed longer in hospital.

Ethan came home first? No.

Owen did.

Three days before Ethan.

Sarah held Owen inside the apartment and cried so hard Rosa had to take him briefly.

Rosa had become family within a week.

She denied it.

Then cooked for everyone.

Lily developed nightmares.

Refused closed bedroom doors.

Hid bread beneath pillows.

The pediatric therapist did not label every behavior immediately.

Trauma.

Disruption.

Hunger during the escape.

Fear.

We responded to what she needed.

Food visible.

Doors open.

Plans spoken aloud.

No forcing hugs.

The first time Lily asked to sleep at my house, I made no grand preparation.

One night.

Sarah brought her.

“Uncle Nathan?”

“Yes?”

“If I knock, you open?”

The question nearly stopped my heart.

“Yes.”

“What if it’s little?”

“I open.”

She nodded.

Then:

“What if you’re sleeping?”

“I wake up.”

It became a rule.

Any child knocking at my door got answered.

May you like

Not because of destiny.

Because five-year-old Lily once nearly froze waiting for one.
