Chapter 23 - SARAH AND I

Rebuilding with Sarah was not hugging once and becoming siblings again.
She was angry.
At Marcus.
Warren.
Me.
Herself.
Some days all in one sentence.
I wanted to compensate.
New house?
She said no.
Private nanny?
No.
Security team?
Limited.
Trust overhaul?
Yes, but independently.
I offered too much because money was the tool I had.
Sarah called it:
“Nathaning.”
“What does that mean?”
“Trying to solve feelings with infrastructure.”
“Some feelings need infrastructure.”
“True.”
She smiled.
“Not all.”
We began therapy together.
I hated it.
Then needed it.
I told her:
“I should have come after you.”
She said:
“You should not have controlled me before I left.”
Both.
“I should have questioned the farewell.”
“Yes.”
“I thought respecting it was—”
“You thought it was noble because it let you avoid being rejected twice.”
That one took a week to admit.
Yes.
She said:
“I should have found another way to reach you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Nate.”
“You were surviving.”
“I still made choices.”
“Not equal choices.”
“Don’t make me helpless to make yourself guilty.”
I stared.
She was right again.
Abuse restricted her choices.

It did not erase every one.
Our repair required both of us to remain adults.
