Chapter 11 - LILY’S STORY

Lily’s forensic interview lasted forty-three minutes.

I did not attend.

Sarah did not.

That protected Lily from looking at either of us before answering.

The child specialist later summarized only what family court and safety planning required.

Marcus yelled often.

He broke objects.

He had pushed Sarah before.

Lily once saw him hold Sarah against a wall.

Sarah told Lily:

“Daddy gets angry but it is never your job to fix it.”

Good.

Marcus sometimes locked Sarah’s phone in a desk.

The night of the storm, Sarah packed bags.

Marcus found them.

Argument.

Broken bottle.

He struck Sarah near the temple.

She fell.

Lily stood in the hallway.

Sarah looked at her.

“Get the babies.”

Lily knew Nathan’s name because Sarah had spent months preparing an emergency plan.

A photograph of my house.

My face.

My address.

She made Lily memorize:

Big glass house.

Mountain road.

Uncle Nathan.

Why did Sarah not call police instead of sending a five-year-old into a blizzard?

She tried.

Marcus smashed her phone.

The landline had been disconnected after an earlier argument.

The family vehicle keys were in Marcus’s pocket.

The neighboring house was empty for winter.

My estate was approximately 1.4 miles by a service path Sarah had walked previously.

She had taught Lily the route during daylight as an emergency drill.

Not because she intended a child to use it in a blizzard.

Because she wanted Lily to know one safe destination.

When Sarah fell, Lily chose the plan she knew.

The storm transformed it into something almost impossible.
