Chapter 22 - THOMAS REED

Thomas’s investigation concluded before Warren’s trial.

He had not forged Sarah’s documents.

Evidence did not prove he knew the 2018 isolation scheme.

He did learn in 2020 that Sarah’s foundation resignation had irregularities.

An internal compliance officer raised concerns.

Thomas dismissed them.

Why?

Because reopening Sarah’s seat threatened management contracts he had negotiated after she left.

He chose money over inquiry.

The foundation board terminated his firm.

Civil settlement required repayment of $620,000 in excessive fees.

No criminal charge where intent beyond reasonable doubt could not be established.

Thomas called me.

“You’re ending fifteen years over one mistake?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I’m ending it because when a document looked wrong, you decided it was more profitable not to look.”

Silence.

He said:

“You did the same with Sarah.”

That sentence hurt because it was partly true.

“Yes.”

Then:

“That’s why I’m not doing it again.”
