Chapter 24 - MARCUS’S TRIAL
Marcus’s criminal trial began eighteen months after the blizzard.
By then Lily was seven.
She did not testify live.
Her forensic interview and other evidence were handled according to evidentiary rulings designed to limit retraumatization.
Sarah testified.
Marcus faced charges related to domestic assault, unlawful restraint, financial fraud, identity misuse, forgery conspiracy, and child-endangerment conduct tied to the storm escape and household conditions.
Prosecutors did not charge him with attempted murder based solely on Sarah’s head injury.
Evidence supported severe assault.
Specific homicidal intent remained disputed.
Precision mattered.
Sarah described the kitchen.
The packed bags.
Marcus grabbing her phone.
Her saying:
“I’m leaving.”
The bottle.
Not a dramatic movie swing.
He threw it.
Glass shattered against the cabinet.
Then he struck her with what remained during the struggle.
She fell.
“Did you tell Lily to enter the storm?”
“No.”
“What did you tell her?”
“Get the babies. Find Nathan.”
“Did you know conditions outside?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sarah cried.
“Because Marcus was between us and the front of the house. Because I thought if Lily stayed, he would take all three children. Because I was losing consciousness.”
The defense attacked the decision.
“You knowingly sent a five-year-old into a blizzard.”
“Yes.”
“Barefoot?”
“She had shoes when she left.”
One disappeared.
Then the other.
“You endangered them.”
Sarah looked at Marcus.
“Yes.”
The courtroom went silent.
