Chapter 10 - THE MEMORY CARD

The card sewn into Lily’s coat contained copies.

Not originals.

Sarah had photographed documents for months.

Trust statements.

Emails.

Texts.

Audio.

One recording began with Marcus shouting.

Another was quieter.

More dangerous.

Marcus:

“You think Nathan wants you back?”

Sarah:

“I know he tried to contact me.”

Marcus:

“Because Warren screwed up one archive.”

Sarah:

“So you admit it.”

Silence.

Then:

“I kept you away from a man who would control you.”

“You controlled me.”

“I protected this family.”

“By stealing from my trust?”

“I invested.”

“Without me.”

“You signed.”

“No.”

Pause.

Marcus:

“Then prove it.”

The arrogance in that sentence told investigators something.

He believed the records favored him.

They did.

Digital signatures.

Sarah’s device IDs.

IP addresses from their home.

Except Sarah had begun documenting where she was on signing dates.

One consent supposedly executed while she was giving birth to Lily.

Hospital admission records proved she was in labor.

Another while she was undergoing emergency dental surgery.

Another from an IP address assigned to Marcus’s office.

Patterns.

The memory card also contained a photograph of Warren meeting Marcus at a hotel café.

Date:

Three months earlier.

Sarah had followed him.

Dangerous.

She knew.

Then the last audio.

Sarah:

“I’m taking the children.”

Marcus:

“You leave, you lose them.”

Sarah:

“No.”

“You have no income.”

“I have a trust.”

“You have a trust because I allow you to still have one.”

Silence.

Then:

“If you make me fight, I’ll tell the court you’re unstable.”

I closed my eyes.

Same language.

May you like

Different family.

Control always seems to discover the same vocabulary.
