Chapter 5 - THE BRACELET I KEPT

I drove home once the roads reopened enough for emergency traffic.

Rosa came with me.

Neither of us spoke.

Upstairs, inside a cedar box in my bedroom closet, lay the bracelet I had believed Sarah returned.

I had not touched it in seven years.

Same width.

Same engraving.

Same year.

Almost perfect.

Then I placed it beside the one from Lily’s blanket.

Difference.

The real bracelet had the tiny dent near the clasp.

The fake did not.

I had noticed seven years ago.

I remembered now.

When the package arrived, I thought a jeweler had polished it.

I told myself Sarah must have had it repaired.

The package included her letter.

The handwriting looked right.

The bitterness sounded right.

That was what made lies convincing.

They borrow pieces you already fear are true.

Mara sent both bracelets for examination.

The fake had been manufactured within months of the 2018 package date.

Receipt?

Unknown.

The engraved font came from a Seattle jeweler.

Still operating.

Records retained.

Order placed by:

Marcus Kane.

Paid cash deposit.

Pickup signature illegible.

There it was.

Not the entire lie.

One corner.

He made a copy of Sarah’s bracelet before sending it to me.

Why keep the real one?

Because Sarah never surrendered it.

May you like

Lily carried it because Sarah gave it to her during escape.

The object I had used as proof of rejection for seven years was evidence of forgery instead.
