Chapter 6 - CALEB WAKES

Caleb woke after thirty hours.

Intubated at first.

Then extubated.

Groggy.

Pain controlled carefully.

A child-abuse pediatrician, Dr. Evelyn Hart, led the interview process.

Not me.

Good.

I had become emotionally attached too quickly.

Caleb’s first question was:

“Is Mom mad?”

Evelyn answered:

“Mom isn’t here right now.”

“Greg?”

“No.”

He relaxed.

That was evidence without being testimony.

Later:

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“Because cast smelled?”

“No.”

“Mom said I made it bad.”

Evelyn waited.

“How?”

“I scratched.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why did Mom say that?”

“She said if doctors saw inside, they’d think she didn’t take care of me.”

My throat tightened.

May you like

Caleb knew the problem.

He had been instructed to protect the adult.
