Chapter 12 - MY GHOST

Three years earlier, a four-year-old girl named Ava Monroe came through my ER.
Fever.
Bruises.
Mother immaculate.
Story polished.
I documented concern.
Asked one question.
Mother cried.
Father became offended.
The child stabilized.
I discharged after social work said outpatient follow-up was arranged.
Six weeks later, Ava came back in cardiac arrest after severe abuse.
She died.
Nobody blamed me legally.
Every review said reasonable process.
I still heard her mother saying:
“She bruises easily.”
When Martha said:
“He complains about everything,”
Ava returned.
That ghost was why I called security.
But trauma can make doctors overcorrect too.
Dr. Hart warned me:
“Do not turn Caleb into Ava.”
“What?”
“Do not decide every unanswered question means the worst thing because you missed something once.”
I hated her for saying it.
May you like
Then thanked her.
Caleb deserved his own facts.
