Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTH

The locked desk contained Andrew Harris’s original trust correspondence.
Caleb had been looking for a photograph of his father.
Greg told him not to touch it.
Caleb opened the drawer anyway.
Inside, he saw a letter.
He could read enough.
Dear Caleb.
Age Nine Review.
Someone wants to meet with you privately.
Caleb became excited.
He told Greg:
“I’m telling them I don’t like when you grab me.”
That sentence changed everything.
Greg grabbed him.
Caleb pulled.
Fracture.
Martha arrived seconds later.
Instead of calling 911 immediately, they argued for twenty-three minutes.
Home-security audio recovered from an old smart speaker captured part.
Martha:
“We’re finished if he tells them.”
Greg:
“Then he doesn’t.”
Martha:
“His arm is broken.”
Greg:
“So we take him in. He fell.”
Martha:
“He already told Rebecca.”
Greg:
“Then Rebecca did it.”
That explained Martha’s first police comment.
Ask Rebecca.
They were preparing an alternate suspect.
At the hospital, Caleb initially said:
Greg twisted me.
Martha leaned over him after the nurse left.
A hallway camera had no audio.
The next documented statement changed:
Greg caught me while I fell.
The cast then became more than treatment.
It hid bruises.
It bought time.
It supported fake medical reimbursement.
And when infection began, they made a conscious choice:
Keep the cast closed long enough to reach the trust distribution and postpone the age-nine interview.
The rot beneath it was not the plan.
May you like
It was the price they decided Caleb could pay.
That was the central truth.
