Chapter 27 - The Birthday She Deserved

Years later, Lula would remember that first birthday differently.

She wouldn't remember the cake as the most important thing.

She wouldn't remember the expensive gifts.

She wouldn't remember the guests.

She would remember falling.

She would remember being humiliated.

But most of all, she would remember her mother's footsteps rushing toward her.

She would remember Taryn kneeling in the grass.

She would remember her mother's hands holding her carefully.

And she would remember the question she had asked.

“Mom… is this still my birthday?”

Taryn had eventually understood that the answer was yes.

It had always been her birthday.

Doreen could take the presents.

She could move the cake.

She could empty the gift table.

She could threaten Taryn's career.

She could try to control the family.

But she could never take away the meaning of the day.

Lula had been born.

She was loved.

She mattered.

And that was enough.

Taryn looked at her daughter across the garden.

Lula was older now, laughing with friends beneath the lights.

The table was full.

Not because anyone had earned the right to sit there.

Not because someone was favored.

Not because a family member had decided who was worthy.

It was full because everyone had been invited.

Taryn smiled.

She finally understood what her mother never had.

A family isn't measured by who sits at the head of the table.

May you like

It is measured by who makes room for everyone else.

And on Lula's birthday, there was always room.
