Chapter 22 - Lula's Letter

Lula wrote her grandmother a letter.
It was only a few pages.
The handwriting was uneven.
Taryn asked whether she wanted to send it.
Lula nodded.
The letter said she remembered the birthday.
She remembered being slapped.
She remembered the empty table.
But she also remembered her mother running toward her.
She wrote that she didn't want to be afraid anymore.
At the end, she wrote:
“I hope you learn to be kind.”
Taryn read it twice.
“Are you sure?”
Lula nodded.
“I'm not saying she can come back.”
“No.”
“But I want her to know.”
Taryn kissed her daughter's head.
“That was very brave.”

Lula smiled.
“I don't want to be mean just because she was mean.”
