The following week, strange things began happening.
A supplier contacted Taryn about an account she didn't recognize.
A hotel manager asked why her authorization had been removed.
A financial adviser called about an investment account.
Taryn began digging.
She discovered that Doreen had been moving company resources between properties for years.
At first, it looked like ordinary internal transfers.
Then Taryn noticed the pattern.
Money from successful properties had been used to cover failing ones.
Several failing properties were connected to people Doreen personally favored.
Taryn stared at the records.
The more she investigated, the worse it became.
Her mother hadn't merely been controlling the family.
She had been controlling the business.
And she had been using Taryn's work to hold the entire system together.
Taryn leaned back.
