Taryn kept her promise.
She gave Lula another birthday.
There were no expensive decorations.
No family guests.
No giant banquet.
There was a small cake.
A few balloons.
Three children from Lula's class.
And a table filled with gifts chosen specifically for her.
Lula stared at the cake.
“Is it really all mine?”
Taryn smiled.
“Yes.”
Lula looked uncertain.
“Grandma won't take it?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Lula closed her eyes.
She made her wish.
Taryn didn't ask what it was.
Some wishes were private.
After the candles were blown out, Lula hugged her mother.
“This is better.”
Taryn kissed her forehead.
“Why?”
“Because nobody is angry.”
