Chapter 24 - The Cake Table

At the next birthday event, Taryn watched Lula standing beside a table covered with cupcakes.

A little boy approached.

He looked nervous.

“Can I have one?”

Lula smiled.

“Of course.”

He took one.

Then another child came.

Then another.

Soon the table was almost empty.

Taryn walked over.

“Lula.”

Lula looked worried.

“We're running out.”

Taryn smiled.

“Then we'll make more.”

Lula's face brightened.

Across the yard, children laughed.

Nobody was ranked.

Nobody was favored.

Nobody was told that a dog mattered more than they did.

Taryn stood quietly.

She thought about the old birthday.

The slap.

The empty table.

The bone-shaped cake.

May you like

The humiliation.

It felt like another lifetime.
