Chapter 9 - THE FIRST FAMILY MEETING

Helen cried.

Karen shouted.

Scott barely spoke.

Robert had hired an outside trust attorney.

Daniel sat beside me but not close enough to touch.

Good.

Karen began:

“This is insane. Daniel gave permission.”

“For forty thousand,” Robert said.

“He always said he’d help.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

His voice shook.

“I said forty.”

Karen laughed.

“You said family takes care of family.”

“I did.”

“So?”

“That isn’t unlimited authorization.”

For perhaps the first time in his life, Daniel told his sister no in front of his parents.

She reacted exactly as he had always feared.

“You’re choosing her.”

She pointed at me.

Daniel looked at Emma’s empty chair.

She was not there.

“Today I’m choosing my daughter.”

Karen’s face collapsed into rage.

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

“What have you done?”

“I covered for you.”

The room changed.

Daniel went white.

I looked at him.

“Covered what?”

Karen smiled.

There was the knife.

Daniel whispered:

“Don’t.”

She laughed.

“So Claire doesn’t know?”

My marriage had apparently contained another room.

“What don’t I know?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Two years ago, I lost eighty-seven thousand dollars.”

“What?”

“Investment.”

“What investment?”

“Scott’s development project.”

I stared.

Scott looked at the floor.

Daniel continued:

“I used my personal savings.”

“Our savings?”

“My account from before marriage.”

Legally maybe separate.

Emotionally not the point.

“Why hide it?”

“It failed.”

Karen said:

“And I convinced Dad not to tell Claire.”

There.

A debt of silence.

Karen had protected Daniel’s secret.

Daniel paid for Chloe.

Then looked away from questionable transfers.

Then stayed silent at Thanksgiving.

Family favors were never free.

They became leverage.
