“Is Dad still my dad?”
Emma asked.
“Yes.”
She was coloring at the kitchen table.
“Even if he lives somewhere else?”
“Yes.”
“Is he in trouble?”
“Yes.”
“With you?”
“Yes.”
“With Aunt Karen?”
“Yes.”
“Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
She frowned.
“That’s a lot.”
“It is.”
“Did he let her hit me?”
The question required care.
“He didn’t know she was going to hit you.”
“But after.”
“He should have spoken.”
“He didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He was afraid of conflict.”
Emma stared.
“That’s stupid.”
“Fear makes people do stupid things.”
“Are you going to forgive him?”
“I don’t know.”
She colored harder.
“I’m still mad.”
“You’re allowed.”
“Can I see him?”
“Do you want to?”
She nodded.

No child should become currency in a marriage either.
