Daniel began therapy the following week.
I did not ask him to.
I told him separation was on the table.
He found a therapist himself.
That mattered slightly.
His family role became clear fast.
Karen was the difficult child.
Daniel the stable one.
Karen struggled in school.
Daniel helped.
Karen’s first boyfriend cheated.
Family gathered around.
Daniel went to college without drama.
Karen dropped out twice.
Daniel graduated.
Karen married Scott after knowing him eight months.
Daniel’s engagement to me lasted a year.
Every crisis confirmed the labels.
Karen needs support.
Daniel can handle it.
Helen’s favorite sentence:
“Your sister feels things more deeply.”
As though Daniel had been born without nerves.
At sixteen, Karen wrecked Robert’s car.
Daniel drove her to school for three months because:
“She already feels terrible.”
At twenty-three, Karen overdrafted an account.
Robert covered it.
Daniel’s graduation gift was reduced that year.
“Family had expenses.”
He accepted.
At thirty-two, he still accepted.
And because he did, everyone around him eventually had to accept too.
Including me.
