Chapter 12 - EVELYN’S ORIGINAL PLAN

Evelyn had anticipated sibling imbalance.

Her memorandum was blunt.

Robert gave me a copy.

Karen tends to convert temporary difficulty into permanent entitlement.

Daniel tends to convert competence into silence.

I almost smiled.

She had known them.

Then:

Neither pattern should be transferred to grandchildren.

The trust therefore required independent subaccounts when grandchildren reached ten.

Emma would turn ten in fourteen months.

At that point:

Her portion of Daniel’s branch would be separately tracked.

Any past inter-branch transfers would be reviewed.

That timing mattered.

Karen knew.

Scott knew.

The remaining money in Karen’s branch was declining.

One final standing authorization had been drafted.

Up to:

$600,000.

Not yet submitted.

Purpose:

Family educational, housing, medical, and emergency equalization.

Donor branch:

Daniel.

Beneficiary acknowledgment:

Emma’s family representative.

Me.

My signature line was blank.

Beside the file, investigators found a scanned copy of my signature from Emma’s school registration.

I nearly vomited.
