Chapter 22 - HELEN

Helen avoided criminal conviction.

Evidence showed she transmitted verification codes.

Evidence also showed Karen repeatedly told her Daniel had approved.

Negligent?

Yes.

Willfully blind?

Probably.

Beyond reasonable doubt on specific fraud intent?

Less clear.

Civil consequences.

Trust removal.

Repayment.

Most importantly for her:

Emma would not see her.

Helen wrote:

Grandma is sorry everyone misunderstood.

I returned it.

Second:

Grandma only wanted all grandchildren treated equally.

Returned.

Third:

I knew Karen was asking Daniel for more than he wanted to give. I chose not to ask questions because I was afraid Karen would collapse if we stopped helping her. That fear made me treat Daniel’s boundaries—and later yours—as less important than Karen’s distress.

I kept that one.

Emma eventually read it.

She said:

“Still not about hitting.”

Correct.

Fourth letter:

When Karen hit you, I looked down because confronting her frightened me more than your pain did in that moment. I am ashamed of that.

Emma kept it.

Did not reply.
