Chapter 26 - DANIEL

Our marriage did not repair because Karen pleaded guilty.
Daniel had his own work.
We lived separately for fourteen months.
Couples therapy.
Individual therapy.
Financial disclosure.
Every account.
Every debt.
Every embarrassing mistake.
I told him:
“If I find another secret later, we’re done.”
He nodded.
“No argument.”
He learned to disappoint his family.
That sounds small.
It was not.
When Helen called demanding he intervene in restitution, he said:
“No.”
When Karen said:
“You chose Claire over your sister,”
he answered:
“I chose not to lie for you.”
When Robert asked him to smooth over Christmas, Daniel said:
“No family dinner until Emma wants one.”
No speeches.
Practice.
Eventually, he moved home.
Not because Emma needed both parents under one roof.
Because I decided the marriage had become honest enough to try again.
Trust did not return to its old form.

Good.
The old form had hidden too much.
