Chapter 7 - CHLOE

Chloe sent Emma an apology card.

I read it first.

Emma chose whether to open it.

She did.

I’m sorry my mom hit you.

I wanted the music house but I didn’t want her to hit you.

I said you took it because Grandma Helen told me it would probably become mine someday anyway.

I’m sorry I yelled.

—Chloe

Emma stared at the card.

“Grandma said it would be hers?”

“Apparently.”

“But Grandpa said it was mine.”

“Yes.”

“Why does everybody tell different things?”

I had no good answer.

“Because adults sometimes say what is convenient instead of what is true.”

She frowned.

“That makes everything hard.”

Exactly.

“Do I have to give Chloe the toy?”

“No.”

“Can I?”

“If you want.”

She thought.

“No.”

“Okay.”

That was consent in its smallest useful form.
