Daniel asked to come home.
I said no.
Not yet.
He was spending time with Emma twice a week.
Therapist involved.
At one visit, Emma asked him:
“Why didn’t you stop Aunt Karen?”
He cried.
“I was scared.”
“Of her?”
“Of making everyone fight.”
“They were already fighting.”
“Yes.”
“Then you should’ve helped me.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Emma asked:
“Would you do it again?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
Daniel looked toward the therapist.
Then back.
“Because I’m practicing saying things when I’m scared instead of waiting for somebody else.”
Emma considered.
Then handed him a board-game piece.
