Chapter 26 - DONNA’S LAST YEAR

Donna died at ninety-six.

Heart failure.

Slow decline.

Hospice.

No secret.

No final evidence.

No missing trust amendment.

Her final months were mostly ordinary.

Soup.

Garden.

Old television mysteries.

Complaining about hospital socks.

One evening she asked:

“Did I ruin your marriage?”

“No.”

“Hattie did?”

“No.”

“Michael?”

“Not alone.”

She looked annoyed.

“Then who?”

“We all made choices.”

She nodded.

“That sounds like therapy.”

“It is.”

Then she smiled.

“Good.”

Her estate was already transparent.

Charities.

A trust for my future descendants if any.

A portion to me.

A small gift to Michael.

Yes.

He cried when he learned.

Hattie received nothing.

Not as punishment.

Donna simply chose otherwise.

At the funeral, Michael sat three rows behind me.

Hattie did not attend.

Donna had requested that.

Her final boundary.

Respected.
