Coleman House reopened to the public at limited capacity.
Donna attended opening day.
She wore a pale blue cardigan.
No pearls.
No speech.
The preservation director offered her the front entrance.
Donna stopped.
For decades she had entered through the kitchen.
I watched her hand tremble.
“Mom?”
“I’m fine.”
“Want another door?”
She thought.
“No.”
We walked through the front.
No applause.
Thank God.
Inside, the house looked familiar and strange.
Hattie’s portraits had been removed from private hallways but preserved in family archive storage.
No revenge erasure.
The public history display said:
1997 — Property refinanced following Coleman hospitality losses.
2007 — Acquired by Evelyn Reed Preservation Trust.
Coleman family retained conditional occupancy.
2028 — Transitioned to nonprofit historic stewardship.
No scandal exhibit.
