Chapter 16 - DONNA’S MONEY

Donna’s $11.4 million brokerage trust became the strangest problem.

She had lived on Social Security, a modest pension, and careful savings.

Suddenly everyone wanted to “help.”

Banks.

Advisers.

Relatives.

Charities.

Donna hated it.

Maya arranged independent fiduciary education.

Donna chose:

Keep most invested.

Create a monthly distribution.

Pay off her apartment mortgage—actually condo loan, modest.

Establish a healthcare reserve.

Donate annually to a senior legal-aid nonprofit.

Gift me nothing large.

I asked once:

“Why not enjoy more?”

“I am.”

“How?”

She lifted a new electric kettle.

“It turns itself off.”

I laughed.

Then she bought a $6,000 garden renovation.

Biggest luxury of the year.

Money did not transform her.

It transformed how many people suddenly treated her words as important.

She noticed.

“That bothers me.”

“Me too.”

“I was the same person last year.”

“Yes.”

That became the reason she funded elder financial-abuse education.

Not because every old person has hidden millions.

Because dignity should not require them.
