Chapter 23 - DONNA AT NINETY

Donna turned ninety in her condo garden.
No Coleman House.
No ballroom.
Twelve people.
Cake.
Tea.
Tomatoes growing badly.
She had spent a decade funding:
Senior legal clinics.
Small caregiver grants.
Transportation services.
No foundation with her face on it.
She hated plaques.
Her brokerage trust still held substantial money because she lived simply.
She asked me:
“Do you think Evelyn knew this would happen?”
“What?”
“Hattie.”
“No.”
“I don’t either.”
Good.
No prophetic grandmother.
