Chapter 12 - MICHAEL’S SLAP

Michael pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault.

No trial.

The kitchen video showed everything.

I placed a loose chain around Hattie’s neck.

Michael entered.

Saw Donna’s injuries.

Struck me anyway.

His lawyer could have argued he believed Hattie faced danger.

Michael refused.

“I saw the chain was loose.”

The judge asked:

“Why did you hit your wife?”

“I believed she had humiliated my mother.”

“Was Hattie being physically harmed?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I was angry.”

He received probation, counseling, community service, and a protective order preventing hostile contact during our separation.

No jail.

First offense.

Single open-handed strike.

No serious injury.

Accurate consequence.

Then my conduct.

Hattie had filed a complaint over the chain.

Prosecutors reviewed it.

Because I placed it around her neck after Donna was safe, I could not claim pure self-defense.

But I never tightened it.

Never threatened strangulation.

No injury.

The prosecutor offered pretrial diversion on a harassment/assaultive-contact misdemeanor theory.

I accepted.

Counseling.

Community service.

No contact with Hattie.

The judge asked:

“What were you trying to do?”

“Make her feel humiliated.”

“Did that protect Donna?”

“No.”

“What would have?”

“Taking Mom away and calling police.”

I completed every condition.

No feminist revenge fantasy where my rage became law.

I wanted Donna’s dignity.

That required respecting boundaries even when mine felt righteous.
