Chapter 18 - DONNA AND MICHAEL

Donna chose to see Michael two years after the divorce.

I did not like it.

Her choice.

Neutral café.

I sat two tables away because she asked.

Michael said:

“I’m sorry I looked at Hattie before I looked at your neck.”

Donna answered:

“You looked at me.”

He waited.

“Then what did I do wrong?”

“You decided what you saw didn’t matter as much.”

He cried.

“Yes.”

Donna stirred tea.

“You told me not to bother Penelope when she was in Boston.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought I was protecting her.”

“From me?”

“From stress.”

Donna smiled sadly.

“I have spent my whole life being called stress whenever I need something.”

Michael looked shattered.

Good sentence.

Not because it punished.

Because it named.

He apologized.

Donna did not forgive him that day.

Later, partly.

No family reunion followed.
