Chapter 23 - GRAHAM COMES HOME
Graham completed custody in his fifties.
Micah was an adult.
No automatic reunion.
Graham requested contact.
Micah waited two years.
Then agreed to one supervised meeting.
I did not attend.
Afterward Micah told me:
“He looks small.”
Graham had once seemed enormous under chandeliers.
Time changes scale.
Micah asked him:
“Why didn’t you look at me when Mom came home?”
Graham remembered.
“I was ashamed.”
“You weren’t ashamed before?”
“I was avoiding it.”
“Same thing?”
“No.”
Micah appreciated distinction.
Then:
“Did you want Theo instead?”
Graham answered:
“I wanted the version of the family where everyone obeyed me. Theo was easier to fit into that story.”
Ugly.
Honest.
Micah asked:
“Did you ever think I was mentally ill?”
“I convinced myself I did.”
“How?”
“By believing only the parts of your behavior that helped me.”
That sentence stayed with Micah.
He met Graham again.
Then occasionally.
No father-son restoration montage.
