Chapter 13 - SABRINA’S DEAL
Sabrina pleaded eventually.
Not before making everyone miserable.
She wanted immunity.
Denied.
She wanted no custody.
Denied.
She wanted Theo kept out of proceedings.
Mostly granted where possible.
Her final agreement required guilty pleas to:
Child endangerment.
Conspiracy to fabricate behavioral evidence.
Participation in attempted trust fraud.
Evidence manipulation.
One count involving food deprivation.
In exchange, prosecutors dismissed one aggravated cruelty charge whose evidentiary threshold was uncertain and recommended a reduced sentence if cooperation proved truthful.
She testified under oath.
“Who first called Theo the true heir?”
“Lorraine.”
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“Did Graham believe Theo was his?”
“At first.”
“Later?”
“He knew he probably wasn’t.”
“Why continue?”
“Because Lorraine said the trust cared about legal recognition, not feelings.”
“Was that accurate?”
“No.”
“Did you know?”
“I didn’t understand the trust.”
“Did you understand K-Line would give Cole Family Holdings thirty percent?”
“Yes.”
“Did you expect to benefit?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Micah was hungry?”
“Yes.”
“Did you feed him?”
“Sometimes.”
“Did you also withhold food?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make him behave the way Lorraine wanted.”
Sabrina cried.
The prosecutor waited.
“Did a three-year-old understand the financial plan?”
“No.”
“Did he cause your debt?”
“No.”
“Did he cause your affair?”
“No.”
“Then why punish him?”
Sabrina looked toward me.
“Because I was jealous of Audrey.”
There.
Not everything was financial.
“She had Graham. The marriage. The company. The child everyone knew was his.”
“You had Theo.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I let Lorraine convince me Theo deserved what Micah had.”
Children converted into scoreboards.
Sabrina’s sentence would come later.
Theo remained with Ryan temporarily after paternity confirmation? Sabrina still legal mother, but because of criminal case, family court granted primary placement to Ryan after transition and supervised contact to Sabrina.
Ryan had not raised Theo.
Transition needed care.
No instant father replacement.
Theo cried for Sabrina.
That mattered.
Adults could not punish him for her crimes.
Ryan started with supervised visits.
Then weekends.
Slow.
Theo and Micah had no contact yet.
Both needed separate healing.
Meanwhile, Graham filed for divorce from me first.
Publicly.
He cited irreconcilable differences.
I laughed.
Then countersued under ordinary family law.
No dramatic claim to everything.
Prenuptial agreement existed.
My company remained mine.
His personal assets remained his subject to equitable rules.
Trust assets were not marital property.
Micah’s branch was his.
The divorce could be clean financially.
Nothing about betrayal was clean.
Then Graham requested joint custody.
Child evaluators said not yet.
He appealed.
