Chapter 22 - LORRAINE’S APOLOGY

Lorraine changed slower.
Her first letters were about family legacy.
Rejected.
Then:
I never intended Micah to be physically harmed.
Rejected as centerpiece.
Intent mattered.
So did what she did.
Years later:
I required Micah to crawl because I believed humiliation would make him compliant enough to fit the behavioral record we had created.
That was truth.
Then:
I told myself the trust was mine in every way that mattered because I had managed the estate for decades.
There.
Entitlement.
Then:
Theo was easier because Sabrina wanted access. Audrey was harder because she had independent power. I treated the children according to which mother I could control.
The cleanest confession.
Micah was sixteen when he chose to read it.
He stopped at:
I called Theo the true heir because the phrase helped me make Micah feel replaceable.
He closed the letter.
“That’s enough.”
We stopped.
No pressure to finish.
Later he asked:
“Was I replaceable?”
“No.”
“Because DNA?”
“No.”
May you like
“Good.”
He had learned the answer himself.
