Chapter 21 - GRAHAM’S FIRST LETTER

Graham wrote from custody after two years.
The first letter blamed Lorraine.
I returned it unread after paragraph two.
The second blamed Sabrina.
Same.
The third arrived a year later.
Audrey,
I knew Micah was probably mine before you left for Europe.
I kept the legal uncertainty because the trust reset frightened me.
There.
I continued.
I told myself the crawling was behavioral structure because admitting it was abuse meant admitting I had allowed abuse.
Then:
I saw his bruises and accepted my mother’s explanation because asking him would have forced me to choose.
Then:
I canceled the pediatric appointments through staff because I was afraid an outside doctor would destroy the psychiatric narrative.
Precise.
No forgiveness request.
He asked whether Micah could someday read the letter.
I stored it.
When Micah was eleven, he asked why Graham had gone away.
We gave age-appropriate truth.
At fourteen, he read a therapist-reviewed version.
He said:
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“That’s worse.”
“Yes.”
“Does he love me?”
I refused to solve that question for him.
“His actions were unsafe. His feelings belong to him.”

Micah hated that answer.
Then later thanked me for it.
