Chapter 14 - THE BRACE COMES OFF FOR TEN MINUTES

At therapy, Isolde asked to practice without the brace.

Dr. Mallory approved short supervised intervals.

Not because Loretta had been right.

Because recovery had progressed.

That distinction mattered to Isolde.

She stood between parallel bars.

Brace removed.

Therapist beside her.

One step.

Then another.

Her knee shook.

She stopped.

“I’m weak.”

“No,” the therapist said.

“You’re rebuilding.”

Different word.

Rebuilding.

Isolde liked it.

She walked six steps.

Then asked for the brace back.

No shame.

Choice.

That night she told me:

“I can walk without it sometimes.”

“Good.”

“Grandma said I had to.”

“You don’t.”

She frowned.

“What if doctor says?”

“Then doctor explains why.”

“Not Grandma?”

May you like

“No.”

Apparently medical governance could be understood at six better than family governance at sixty-six.
