Chapter 12 - MY SLAP HAS ITS OWN CONSEQUENCES

Loretta’s cheek bruised.

Her shoulder hurt after striking the chair.

No fracture.

No serious injury.

I admitted the slap.

The prosecutor offered misdemeanor diversion.

Anger management.

Restitution.

No unlawful direct contact.

Completion meant dismissal.

I accepted.

An old family associate said:

“Your mother abused the kid and you’re the one in class?”

“Yes.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“No.”

Different acts.

Different files.

My instructor, Raymond Cole, asked:

“What did the slap accomplish?”

“It stopped nothing.”

“Did it make you feel better?”

“For about one second.”

“Then?”

“My daughter flinched.”

He nodded.

“What did that tell you?”

“That violence doesn’t become safe because the person doing it loves you.”

I hated how clean the sentence sounded.

Still true.
