Chapter 9 - THE STERLING FOUNDATION

My mother’s self-image mattered.
Victoria Sterling was not cruel in her own story.
She founded women’s shelters.
Paid scholarships.
Funded pediatric cancer research.
Raised millions.
People adored her.
She had also decided Grace was dangerous to me.
Why?
Class.
Age.
Poverty.
And one incident.
When Sophia was one, Grace confronted Victoria at a holiday dinner.
My mother had scheduled Sophia’s nanny without asking.
Grace said:
“You do not get to hire staff for my child without me.”
Victoria answered:
“We are trying to help.”
Grace:
“Help that ignores no is control.”
My mother never forgot.
To her, Grace became difficult.
Ungrateful.
Emotionally unstable.
