Chapter 14 - THE FAKE PHOTOGRAPHS

For fourteen months, I received photographs of Sophia.
Birthday.
School.
Playground.
One showed her holding a violin.
She did not play violin.
Another:
Horseback riding.
Sophia had never ridden a horse.
Some images were old photographs altered.
Others used another child photographed from behind.
I had looked at them.
Saved them.
Sent heart emojis to an account supposedly managed by Grace.
I hated myself.
Daniel said:
“You were deceived.”
“I also accepted distance because it was convenient.”
He said nothing.
Good.
I traveled constantly.
Singapore.
London.
Zurich.
New York.
I told myself:
Grace wants space.
Sophia is safe.
Money handles practical things.

Money became permission not to verify.
That was mine.
