Chapter 15 - SOPHIA ASKS IF I’M STAYING

Sophia moved with Grace into a temporary apartment paid directly by a court-approved emergency arrangement.
Not my family office.
Independent.
I visited.
First time, Sophia kept checking the window.
“Where are you going?”
“Nowhere.”
“Tomorrow?”
“I have work.”
Her face fell.
“I can cancel.”
“No.”
Grace watched.
I corrected:
“I have work, but I’ll come after.”
“What if you die?”
The question hit.
“I’m not planning to.”
“Grandma said accidents happen.”
I swallowed.
“They do.”
“Then how do I know?”
I took out my phone.
“What?”
“We make a plan.”
Daily video call.
Emergency contacts.
Grace has my attorney’s number.
My office.
My doctor? No.
“Most importantly,” I said, “if anyone tells you I’m dead, Mom checks with people she trusts.”
Sophia thought.
“Not Grandma?”
“No.”
She nodded.
