Chapter 20 - MY HOUSE

Dennis had used my property for four years without paying rent.
Then used its address to collect trust reimbursements.
I felt stupid.
Angry.
Complicit.
My attorney asked:
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Did you sign rent receipts?”
“No.”
“Did you ever tell anyone Dennis paid you?”
“No.”
“Then stop calling yourself complicit legally.”
“Morally?”
He sighed.
“That is not my department.”
Dr. Grant handled that.
“Why did you let Dennis live rent-free?”
“He was my son.”
“Did you resent it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him?”
“Not enough.”
“Why?”
“I wanted him around.”
There.

Dennis barely allowed me inside.
I still paid taxes.
Repairs.
Insurance.
Then answered when he asked for a cleaner.
He had learned my availability was dependable even when affection was not.
