Chapter 14 - KARA AND TRISHA

Kara did not want to see her mother.

Not immediately.

She did want Sophie.

Family court did not hand over a traumatized five-year-old to a mother she had seen mainly through screens simply because biology was established.

Evaluation.

Records.

Safety plan.

Therapeutic reunification.

Slow.

Correct.

Kara came to Portland.

When she entered the hospital family room, Sophie hid behind Rosa.

Kara stopped.

Did not approach.

“Hi, Soph.”

Sophie looked.

Then:

“Mommy?”

Kara started crying.

“Yes.”

Sophie did not run into her arms.

That mattered.

Reality is not always cinematic.

She asked:

“Why didn’t you get me?”

Kara’s face broke.

“I tried.”

Sophie thought.

“Daddy said you forgot.”

“I didn’t.”
