Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTH
The biggest lie was not that Kara died.
Not even that Sophie lived in Portland.
It was why Dennis had kept Sophie at all.
A recovered email from five years earlier.
Dennis to his attorney:
If Kara regains custody, Bennett trust control follows the child.
Attorney:
You do not control the trust. You may submit child-support requests as guardian.
Dennis:
That’s what I mean.
The lawyer warned him repeatedly:
Guardianship must serve Sophie, not financial interests.
Maintain accurate residence.
Disclose caregiver.
Do not interfere with maternal contact without court authority.
Dennis ignored all three.
Then another message to Marlene:
Kara gets unstable whenever she talks to Sophie. Reduce calls.
Marlene:
Doctor says contact helps.
Dennis:
I’m the guardian.
Later:
Do not tell Kara about the trust review.
Marlene:
Why?
Dennis:
Because she’ll use it to take Sophie.
There was no hidden plan to seize five million dollars outright.
Independent trustees prevented that.
Dennis wanted the stream.
Housing.
Travel.
Caregiving.
Fees.
A lifestyle partly financed by a child he refused to acknowledge publicly.
And Kara?
Keeping her unstable—or appearing unstable—preserved his authority.
He told Trisha she was dead.
He told Kara she was legally barred.
He told Sophie her mother forgot her.
He told me nothing.
He told the trust Sophie lived in my house.
Every relationship received the version required to keep money and control moving toward him.
