Chapter 9 - THE ROUTE THAT CHANGED

Genevieve was questioned for financial crimes and evidence concealment.
She denied involvement in my kidnapping.
The route map, she claimed, came from Victor’s archive.
Victor said he had never seen it.
The paper carried a handwritten correction marking the road where my convoy was diverted minutes before armed men attacked the original route.
That change saved my life.
For seven years, my father believed a loyal security officer made the decision independently.
Genevieve said the correction belonged to Julian.
He would have been twenty-nine.
I confronted Harrison.
“Did Julian work with you then?”
“No.”
“Did you know him?”
“Only by name. Victor’s company supplied vehicles for the charity conference.”
The Vances had access to transport schedules.
Not necessarily the leak.
A second mark on the route matched Victor’s handwriting from corporate documents.
The conspiracy was older than my marriage.
Julian requested another meeting, this time with counsel.
He admitted discovering my identity before proposing to me.
Victor found the Blackwood security records and encouraged the relationship.
“But I loved you,” Julian said.
“After being assigned to meet me?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“Did your father tell you where I would be?”
Julian could not answer.
His silence confirmed it.
He insisted the marriage became real. Maya was never part of the original plan. When the company’s hidden losses surfaced, Victor demanded access to my trust.
Julian helped design Project Thread.
He claimed Genevieve added the physical humiliation.
He claimed Victoria coached Maya without telling him the details.
Every participant had a boundary of cruelty they said someone else crossed.
The investigators recovered one final deleted message from Julian to Victor.
If Eleanor activates Red, Harrison will respond. We can trace the handoff and identify the controlling Blackwood account.
Victor replied:
And if she refuses?
Julian answered:
Maya will make her react.

The dangerous stage of the story was no longer discovering whether my husband betrayed me.
It was learning how much of my life had begun as his family’s operation.
