Chapter 13 - THE FINAL VOTE

The emergency board meeting took place under court supervision because the lenders had obtained a preservation order overnight.

Victor sat at the head of the table.

Victoria remained absent under release conditions.

Genevieve had entered a cooperation agreement but still faced assault and fraud charges.

Julian attended remotely with his attorney.

I entered beside Adrian, Lena, Harrison, and the independent restructuring officer.

Victor smiled when he saw me.

“The parasite found her father.”

I sat across from him.

“The company is not your house, Victor.”

“It is my name.”

“It is twelve million dollars missing from employee and creditor accounts.”

He dismissed the ledgers as misunderstood executive expenses.

The buyer’s attorney presented the hotel-sale proposal.

It would generate immediate cash.

It would also transfer the most profitable properties into a company Victor secretly controlled.

The independent officer recommended rejection.

Victor called for a vote anyway.

His family bloc approved.

Two outside directors opposed.

The decision reached a tie pending Julian’s vote.

Julian’s face appeared on the screen.

“Eleanor, give me authority and I will vote against him.”

“You already have your own vote.”

“My shares are restricted by the investigation.”

“Then tell the board the truth.”

“If I do, I lose everything.”

Maya’s face flashed through my mind—her cheek red, her mouth bleeding, her father watching.

“You lost us before you lost the shares.”

Julian looked toward Victor.

Then he voted to approve the sale.

The man who claimed he wanted to save the company chose his inheritance again.

Victor smiled.

I placed the authenticated Blackwood agreement on the table.

“Blackwood Meridian is exercising the protective conversion clause.”

The smile disappeared.

Conversion did not instantly make us owners of everything. It triggered lender review, regulatory notice, and court-supervised voting rights.

The agreement allowed one immediate action during a verified fraudulent transfer attempt:

The Blackwood proxy could suspend extraordinary asset sales for seventy-two hours.

I authenticated with the encrypted device.

The hotel sale froze.

The restructuring officer took temporary operational control.

Victor lunged across the table toward the device.

Harrison intercepted him before he reached me.

Board security restrained Victor while police officers waiting outside entered under the warrant connected to the hidden cabinet and financial records.

Julian watched his father handcuffed.

Then he said the words I had once begged to hear.

“I’ll tell you everything.”

Too late to save the marriage.

Not too late to affect the truth.

He admitted Project Thread, the flight plan, the forged proxy, and the edited video strategy. He also admitted concealing evidence of Victor’s connection to my kidnapping.

His cooperation would be considered.

It would not erase his choices.

Outside the boardroom, reporters shouted questions.

I gave no triumphant statement.

Three thousand employees still faced uncertainty because a family had treated a company like private blood.

My final decision was not whether to destroy the Vances.

It was whether I could use the power they wanted without becoming another person who believed ownership justified control.

I instructed Blackwood Meridian to support restructuring under an independent board.

No family seats.

Including mine.

Adrian looked at me.

“You are surrendering the position.”

“I am using it once to make sure no family can do this again.”

The company would survive or fail under verified numbers—not inherited authority.

Then Lena’s phone rang.

The family-court judge had reviewed Julian’s recorded admissions.

His parental contact with Maya was suspended indefinitely.

He had lost the last leverage he believed she gave him.
