Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO THAT STARTED LATE

By morning, a twenty-second video of me striking Victoria had reached every social platform that mattered to the Vance family.

The clip showed Maya crying in my arms, Victoria approaching, and my palm sending her down.

It did not show Genevieve hitting Maya.

Its caption called me an unstable wife attacking an elderly woman during a charity dinner.

Julian filed for emergency temporary custody.

His affidavit said I had exposed Maya to armed strangers and suffered “a psychological break involving a mysterious electronic device.”

He requested that the court order me to surrender it.

My attorney, Lena Ortiz, read the filing twice.

“Why does your husband care about this device?”

“It belongs to my family.”

“What does it do?”

“I cannot tell you yet.”

Her expression hardened.

“Then you are asking me to defend a secret while he defines it first.”

I knew she was right.

Fear still controlled the answer.

Maya’s pediatric interview confirmed Genevieve struck her after deliberately stepping into the child’s path. Maya said Victoria told her before dinner to “be sweet and touch the pretty dress.”

The sentence suggested preparation.

It did not prove why.

Police obtained raw video from one guest whose cloud backup had started earlier. It captured Genevieve watching Maya approach and glancing toward Julian seconds before the slap.

Julian looked directly into the camera.

Then he turned away.

The custody judge allowed Maya to remain with me temporarily but ordered neither parent to remove her from the county. Julian received supervised contact.

Outside court, Harrison handed me a device report.

The erased chandelier camera had attempted to transmit one file before deletion.

The filename was RED THREAD CONFIRMATION.

Someone had arranged the entire dinner to make me break the bracelet.
