Chapter 6 - THE CHILD WHO WAS COACHED

Maya’s second forensic interview lasted forty-three minutes.
I watched through one-way glass with Lena and the child specialist.
No one asked whether her father was bad.
No one asked what I wanted her to say.
Maya described Victoria taking her into a powder room before dinner.
Grandma told me the pretty lady loved children.
She told me to touch the silver dress and say sorry if the lady got upset.
“What would happen then?” the interviewer asked.
“Daddy would fix everything.”
“Did Daddy tell you that?”
Maya nodded.
“He said I had one little job.”
My knees weakened.
Julian had used our daughter as the first movement in the scene.
He may not have ordered the slap.
He placed Maya where Genevieve could deliver it.
The specialist asked whether Maya had seen the red bracelet before.
“Daddy asked where Mommy keeps it.”
“When?”
“Lots of times.”
Maya thought it was ordinary jewelry.
Julian knew better.
Harrison finally explained one piece.
The bracelet contained a passive authentication filament. Breaking it activated an emergency identity channel and revoked older access permissions.
“Why would Julian want that?”
“To confirm the channel still recognizes you.”
“Recognizes me as what?”
Harrison looked toward Lena.
I stopped him.
“Not yet.”
Lena closed her notebook.
“If you hide one more material fact, I withdraw.”
I told her I needed one day.
That delay cost me.
Julian’s lawyers filed a motion claiming the encrypted device contained stolen Vance corporate information. Police arrived with a warrant limited to identifying its ownership and contents relevant to the alleged theft.
The device belonged to a Blackwood family trust, but I had never disclosed that trust in marital financial statements because I believed my interest was contingent.
The omission looked suspicious.
The court ordered the device held by a neutral forensic examiner.
As it left my possession, Harrison’s face went rigid.
“What?”
“The bracelet revoked old permissions,” he said. “The device did not.”
Someone with the earlier key might still be able to unlock it.

That night, the examiner reported an attempted remote access.
The request came from Victor Vance’s corporate server.
